"Oh the times! The Customs!" railed Cicero, a battle cry against the coarsening of a culture and surely more appropriate today than ever...or maybe not. Join the Ark Theatre as they put the lie to that sentiment in its hilarious adaptation of The London Cuckolds, a rarely produced and bawdy gem of Restoration Comedy.
As three oblivious husbands stumble about London trying to keep their wives faithful, two conniving gallants have other ideas. The bored and lusty wives prove willing accomplices, all too eager to stray, and the madness that follows is hilarious and wicked in the best possible way.
Originally staged in 1681 and just as salacious as any modern day imaginings, The London Cuckolds delighted London crowds and thrived in the repertory for 70 years. Following centuries out of the spotlight, the play resurfaced in 1985 with a new adaptation, followed by yet another version staged by The Royal National Theatre in 1998. Now, in a world premiere adaptation, Edward Ravenscroft's outrageous farce has been reimagined by Ark Associate Artistic Director (and Ovation and LA Weekly award nominee) Richard Tatum. While keeping the classic comedy elements intact, Tatum's stripped down script picks up the pace and has a modern sensibility that will have even today's audiences blushing and howling.
