Want to make a difference? Want to leave a part of your individuality on a thriving artistic institution?

Right at the very last inch before success, the strength of mighty Sisyphus fails and it's all he can do to keep the bolder from crushing him as it slowly rolls back to the bottom of the incline. He's trapped forever; his only way out is the stone that stands in his way. When his strength returns, there is nothing he can do except try again.

Sound familiar? You and I may not have the strength or endurance of an immortal but we can all make a difference... and O, what our Greek rock-and-roll hero wouldn't give for a little help. So it is at LA's very own award-winning Ark Theatre Company. Our new, fabulous space, so many great reviews, shows frequently selling out - there is simply no one else in America's second largest city even trying to put on as much quality classical and cutting-edge theatre. No one! Yes, it has been a long climb and a heavy load but you won't hear any complaint - we know an excellent production is the sum of the time and work invested by all. Not only our patrons, but both the L.A. Times and the L.A. Weekly have recognized this effort and its result. In fact, the LA TIMES recently devoted an entire page to glowing reviews of both THE TEMPEST and RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET, and in the LA WEEKLY's April feature on "100 Actor-Driven Ensembles With Staying Power", Ark was not only on the list, but described as "always worth watching".

We've established a solid reputation and our work consistently generates recommendations from reviewers. Of our recent production of "The Tempest", the LA Times writes, "Amid so much fantasy, it's almost a shock to see everyday reality depicted so truthfully."

Here's where you come in. We are so close to the very pinnacle of what we want Ark to achieve. Our professional and artistic boulders are so nearly at their peak - and yet, the story of Sisyphus keeps whispering in our ears. However, it isn't our strength or determination in question - it's simply money.

Part of our quest is to do groundbreaking work without having sky-high ticket prices - indeed the title of our 'pay-what-you-can' nights says it all. Company members cover their fair share of the bills, and gracious donors have picked up enough of the tab to keep us moving forward until now. We have reached the limit of what present resources can do especially with so much work still to be put into our new space.

We need your help. To lose momentum now could mean slowly sinking back in obscurity or scaling-down future productions and we have vowed not to let that happen. Will you join us? We're not asking you to take on the whole load, just pick up a share of it at whatever level possible and help free the artists from the pressures of having to just scrape by.

If only Sisyphus had a friend with a small stone wedge. He could push the bolder up the hill, stuff the wedge in place to keep it from rolling back, catch his breath and finally win the day. The bigger the wedge, of course, the surer he could be of success.

Likewise Ark Theatre Company, which is proud to think of you as a friend, could more easily move weighty of classics, experiment more freely in its acclaimed lab productions, and further the art and artists of our community - if only you will supply a wedge against the steep cost of continuing.

We will keep pushing our own chosen bolder of service to the art community up the long slope toward lasting success... but we really could use a hand. Your hand.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!
