Since its humble genesis as a lab production at the University of Nebraska 18 years ago, Soda Pop has floored audiences with its odd blend of broad, stylized acting and zealous commitment to wringing truths from even the most absurd scenarios. Written by Los Angles actor and writer Jim Hanna (A Dish Served Cold, Corpus, Pelvic Variations), the play has blossomed into a nationwide sensation, appearing at numerous theatres across the country, including long-running productions in New York and Chicago (Hanna has even written a "family-friendly" version of Soda Pop that has been performed at countless high schools throughout the US).
With each successful production, the show has evolved as Hanna tweaks and updates the near melodrama of Soda Pop. The essence, however, always remains the same: gifted comic actors throwing themselves headlong into the preposterous tale of the eight perfect teenagers who frequent Dot's Soda and Candy shop.
After a 13 year absence from L.A. stages, the Ark Theatre is proud to present the latest iteration of this loud, hilarious and often inane musical excoriation of the 1950's.
Hearts will sink, break and soar as Betty, Bobby, Mary, Jerry, Peggy, Joey, Susie, and Tommy scramble mightily for dates to the Prom at Thomas Jefferson Senior High. Audiences will tap toes, roar with laughter and question their very sanity as their memories of High School are mercilessly skewered. Featuring a talented cast of Ark Theatre veterans and newcomers, Soda Pop will shock with its brazenness and charm with its sweetness as Dot's kids dance, sob and even lip-sync (yes, lip-sync) their way through the horrors and thrills of being a perfect teen in 1959.
